KHICHAN BIRD SANCTUARY
Experience a luxury safari in Khichan the land of Jains and Cranes.
ABOUT KHICHAN BIRD SANCTUARY
Wake up to a dawn unlike any other not to music, but to thousands of wings cutting through the desert sky. In Khichan, mornings begin with the calls of demoiselle cranes, their silhouettes sweeping across a blazing Thar sunrise.
What makes this spectacle even more extraordinary is how it began. In the early 1970s, a simple act of kindness by a local villager, Ratan Lal Maloo, grew into a Jain community tradition of feeding these migratory birds. Since then, the cranes have returned, year after year, in ever-growing numbers turning Khichan into a sanctuary, officially recognised in 1988, and a rare example of trust between humans and the wild.
Khichan isn’t just about cranes far from it. This desert landscape supports over 200 species of birds, from the graceful hoopoe and the vivid Indian roller to the desert wheatear and the unmistakable Indian peafowl.
Against the warm hues of the Thar, their presence brings the landscape to life adding depth, colour, and quiet wonder to every moment of your journey here.
